It is primarily focused on WSDOT’s fish passage projects in Western Washington and may be timely as we approach the wet season.

Abstract: As Washington has ramped up efforts to restore fish connection across State owned barriers,
stream design specialists have evolved our approach to ensure that we have the right knowledge at our
disposal as we approach stream restoration projects. The sciences of hydrology and hydraulics that play
into stream design are well established. We have a toolbox full of measures that we can deploy to address
streambank erosion, yet we have learned that so much more is needed to understand the stream to be
successful in restoring a stream to mimic natural habitat. As these projects go to construction, we see
temporary erosion control challenges. Traditional approaches and training fall short of having established
techniques to address projects where the water resource runs through the work area. This talk will discuss
lessons that we have learned to implement erosion control measures that are consistent with the stream
and habitat restoration work.
