It’s time to have your say in the future leadership of IECA Australasia.

The IECA Australasia Board of Directors is made up of nine Directors serving three-year terms. This year, three Board positions are available, and we are seeking your vote to help elect the candidates who will help lead and shape the future of our Chapter.

Our nominees are passionate professionals committed to supporting the growth and success of IECA Australasia. As part of the nomination process, each candidate was asked to:

As a current director who has served for the past three years including the last year as the Australasian Chapter President, I believe I can continue to bring my industry experience, practical management and technical skills to the association. Representing the Australasian chapter on the international stage, I believe I have also been able to vocally promote the leading and innovative best practice ESC implementation being undertaken in the Australasian chapter.

I enjoy leading teams and opportunities that encourage sustainable outcomes, innovations and best practice ESC. I believe it is important to build and maintain a strong environmental culture through proactive environmental engagement and leadership. My niche continues to lie with incorporating the environmental requirements including best practice ESC and practical sustainable construction. As a returning board member, I also commit to continuing this strong passion for environmental stewardship and awareness.

I have continued to promote IECA into the sustainability field including presentations to South Australian, Victorian, New South Wales and Queensland roads authorities, regulators, industry groups and tertiary institutions. I have also continued to represent IECA at IS Council events and technical working groups (Design and As Built) to ensure our industry continues to work towards sustainable and innovative best practice.

As my passion for the sustainable approach to all aspects of civil construction, I believe as a returning director I can continue to promote and assist in the industry to develop new innovative sustainable products and applications. I also wish to continue sharing my knowledge and presenting new ideas to the larger industry. For the association, I have, and will, offer my time and skills to further educate and present at IECA events and presentations. As a strong communicator and wide network, I believe I can continue expanding our IECA networks and further positively promote innovative sustainable best practices.

Initiatives and collaborations through my previous tenure has continued to deliver the On Country ESC program with first nations throughout Queensland. This has also resulted in funding and further training opportunities within State and local government programs and expanding the program to other regions first nation groups.

I will continue to utilise my strengths and network connections as an IECA director by working closely with the project teams, managing stakeholders, government bodies and client representatives to implement sustainable and practical environmental outcomes focussing on not only erosion and sediment controls but rehabilitation and nature-based systems and solutions.

These are achieved through strong industry network contacts and facilitating collaborative projects incorporating government, private and community partnerships.

I have more than 20 years’ experience driving best practice in environmental systems and programs and throughout this time, have worked in various roles across multiple infrastructure projects. My experience spans a broad range of industries including water, gas, road, rail and mining.

For the past 15 years, my work has had a major infrastructure project focus, managing and delivering environmental compliance within complex, environmentally sensitive projects as either a consultant or direct manager for civil construction contractors.

These roles have required me to form and maintain working relationships with stakeholders at all levels from engineering, supervisory and field personnel, to client and regulatory authorities. My experience liaising with regulatory authorities and clients combined with developing and implementing environmental management plans and procedures has ensured compliance with approvals as well as ensuring environmental impacts of construction are mitigated.

I have enjoyed the experiences that come with working on a diverse range of projects as it has provided me with a greater appreciation of how the mechanics of construction work across multiple sectors. These experiences have also taught me that the environmental activities needed to deliver a project are often thought to be the same, however they are often not, and project staff must work together as a team to deliver best outcomes.

My wife and I and our two teenage children, have lived on the northwest side of Brisbane for over a decade. In addition to all the fun stuff that comes with raising kids, we have travelled and camped with them to appreciate the great country we live in. Being a family, watching our kids grow, getting to know them as people of the world and learning how to parent successfully has and is the best experience I have ever had. It has however, brought to light that I still have much to learn. Being a parent has bolstered the importance of environmental stewardship and that we have to protect what we have, pay it forward, and pass it on to future generations to do the same.

I am a believer in economical sustainable development and that everyone has a part to play in making this a reality. I believe there is real beauty and value in what surrounds us, and we do not have to look far to find it.

In my current role, I serve as a Works Coordinator with the NSW Soil Conservation Service, overseeing a team of five dedicated environmental professionals operating in the Far North Coast of New South Wales. Our mission is to rejuvenate the local environment, one degraded landscape at a time. We embrace innovative methods that replicate natural ecosystems and leverage locally available resources. Of particular interest to me is the restoration of the Far North Coast's waterways, especially those of significant environmental value, to enhance the community's connection with the environment.

Through my involvement in a range of civil projects and my enthusiasm for exploring technical intricacies, I have cultivated a solid understanding of how environmentally focused civil projects are delivered. I possess a firm grasp of the issues that exist in this field and the best practices and tools necessary to address them. My vision is to champion education of best practice as a solution to environmental degradation, leading by example and highlighting the positive aspects of the projects I’m involved with.

Beyond my professional commitments, my family has recently grown with my daughter celebrating her first birthday in late August. They fuel my motivation to improve the world we live in, one stabilised riverbank at a time.

I am an Environmental Manager for Fulton Hogan Construction, working across a range of civil projects in Queensland and South Australia. My role is varied across all aspects of environmental management however erosion and sediment control and associated water quality and management is where my passion lies. I have been involved with IECA since I joined the construction industry 7 years ago. In 2017 I was awarded the Young Professional Scholarship and I then became a board member for the first time in 2020. I am also a CPESC and an Infrastructure Sustainability Accredited Professional (ISAP) and am interested in how these worlds can combine.

I grew up on a sheep farm in Southland, New Zealand and my love for the outdoors and the environment has stemmed from this upbringing.

I have a 7-month-old son at home – so my ‘spare’ time looks a little different from how it used to! Currently, weekends are spent as a family at home on the Redcliffe Peninsula in Queensland.

I work with the Soil Conservation Service (SCS) as an Environmental Officer after moving from Newcastle to Scone in mid-2022. I’m working on river rehabilitation projects within the Hunter Valley Flood Mitigation Scheme. I’ve got to undertake river geomorphology training and I now see our rivers in a new way. I am learning lots of new skills and loving it. The ESCs employed are unique for each site and stage of construction. It is keeping me on my toes.

It’s a big change from Erosion and Sediment Control Officer in local govt for 12 years. The focus of preventing pollution from construction sites was 70% education and 30% compliance. It was all about urban ESC and allowed me to learn, improve and expand my skills in erosion, drainage and sediment control, site inspection and auditing, and revegetation. I achieved my CPESC certification in 2011 and CESSWI in 2023.

I grew up on a mixed farm near Tamworth, joining the SCS in 1990 while completing a B. Natural Resources (majoring in soil and water engineering) for which I achieved Honours.

From 1994-1998, as a Soil Conservationist posted at Quirindi, Coolah and Tamworth (until SCS closed down in 1998), my days involved chasing dozers (managing dozer teams), designing earthworks and farm planning (contour banks, waterways and farm dams), some river works, and extension work. It was rural erosion and sediment control.

In 1998 I organised 3 months working voluntarily with the USDA as a Soil Conservationist in Ohio, Nebraska, Kansas and Texas. I got to see new techniques, soils and ideas.

After the SCS, I spent 7 years administering state govt Native Vegetation Reforms in Northern NSW. I liaised with landholders proposing to clear, explained exemptions available, and advised if an application was required. Any assessment utilised SCS gained skills of slope, soils, land management practices, and learnt a few new ones including vegetation identification.

I love gardening, trail running and hiking, am married to Brett and have 2 British Bulldogs.

I am based in Tauranga, New Zealand. Currently I am employed by Heb Construction and am based as the Construction Environmental Manager for the Takitimu North Link Project. I studied at the University of Waikato and completed a Bachelor of Science and Technology majoring in Environmental Planning.

I have eight years’ experience in the environmental field with significant construction environmental management and compliance experience. I have spent my career working on a combination of large and small infrastructure, earthworks and roading projects as well as also ecological work. Being involved in large projects from their beginning has provided me with a well-rounded appreciation for the full lifecycle of the project planning and construction process. I have also spent time working for the client and council which gives me insight into all facets of the environmental regulatory framework, not just from the contractor’s perspective.

I thrive in high pressure fast paced environments and love coming up with out of the box solutions to problems. This is where my true passion for Erosion and Sediment Control has come from being able to apply out of the box thinking and achieve great outcomes in the ESC space.

Outside of work I love cooking, mountain biking, fishing, hiking, hunting and exploring the amazing country of New Zealand. I also have a passion for travel and try to get overseas whenever I can.

I’ve had the pleasure of working in erosion and sediment control within the construction industry for the past 7

I am grateful to have the opportunity to serve as a Director as I would like to continue to give back to the IECA community. Throughout my involvement with IECA, I have had the privilege of serving on a number of IECA committees including the Newsletter, Young Professionals, Events and Conference committees, with latter also having the opportunity to chair the Conference committee for the 2025 conference in Melbourne. In addition, I have also represented Australasia on the Environmental Connection Magazine Editorial Board reviewing articles for the IECA Magazine. Becoming an IECA Australasian Director would allow me to continue to give back to the community by promoting IECA through the Victorian erosion and sediment control community to communicate best practice while the Victoria Big Build Project’s are still ongoing. I would love the opportunity to also be a voice for the next generation of Young Professionals coming through IECA to ensure its longevity in Australia and New Zealand. I believe with my connections within Victorian Infrastructure and Young Professionals, I can bring a unique perspective to the Board of Directors.

I believe I can offer the association a positive can-do attitude who is always happy and prepared to put their hand up to help where needed. I have experience leading committees through my time chairing the IECA Conference committee as well as leading sub-committees as part of the Monash University Graduate Association. I have experience in event organisation such as fundraisers for my local community theatre group, networking events as part of the Monash Graduate Association as well as through the IECA conference committee. I have strong networks within the Victorian Infrastructure sector having worked on multiple Victorian Big Build construction projects including a network of young professionals through my time mentoring graduates. I also have experience in writing grant applications and marketing events and brands for my theatre group and providing strategic direction of committees including through updates to constitutions and by-laws.

I am highly passionate in protecting the environment and the planet we all live on. This drives me in my work and my home life, to leave behind a world for generations to come. I hold a PhD in chemistry and have thankfully found myself not in a laboratory but outdoors in the construction sector doing what I love by minimising our impact on the planet. I am a team player who loves working in groups with a diverse range of people and backgrounds and get along with everybody. Outside of work I love to play footy (the one where you primarily use your foot) and be outdoors bike riding and tramping. I love doing these activities with my wife Cecelia and three children.

I have been an active member of the IECA since 2018 with my current employer. HEB (current employer) have been super supportive in me attending several conferences both in NZ, Australia and even luckier the USA (Kansas City 2023) where I have both been a delegate and presenter. Prior to this my previous employer, where I started in 2016 right out of university, was a regular stand holder/supplier at IECA conferences in Australia and NZ, which is where I initially met and networked with a lot of members of the IECA/ESC industry.
