How a cellular confinement system can be used for slope stabilization

Problem: Severe eroding at bank of the river due to stormwater discharges from adjacent sites and upland areas.
These areas included sheet flow from asphalt parking, pipe discharges, and natural dirt/grassed swales.
Solution: Re-grade and install high density polyethylene cellular confinement system on eroding slope. The cells confine infill material creating a stable, permeable layer of slope protection.
Components:
· 6” medium cell three dimensional HDPE matrix panels, tendons, and washer locks.
· The tendons and washers were used due to the manufacturer’s recommendations for slopes greater than 2:1.
· 12” Steel pipe utilized in anchor trench and backfilled with concrete.
· ¾” stone was used to fill 4” of the 6” cell depth.
Remaining 2” was filled with loam and seed.
Overall results: Successful! Installed in early January, this system has survived many heavy rainfalls with no signs of erosion. Grass has begun to grow and a sustainable green hard armoring was successful. Project overview pictures taken late May 2024.
